Maintaining proactive and assertive law enforcement services to safeguard our community
Sheriff Berrong firmly believes in a proactive and aggressive approach to keeping Blount County’s citizens safe. Sheriff Berrong’s success in combatting lawlessness in Blount County it to instill an attitude of servitude to our citizens. Our deputies accomplish this by patrolling Blount County’s 559 square miles on a 24/7 basis and by being proactive in our approach to keeping crime down. When not responding to calls for service, deputies are patrolling our roads – being seen – even in the wee hours of the morning. Each of Blount County’s four patrol zones are covered by at least two deputies at all times and can usually respond within just a few minutes or less to calls for service.
Sheriff Berrong is NOT a soft on crime leader. Deputies are given leeway to stop threats to public safety and crimes in progress within the parameters of state and federal laws and Sheriff’s Office policies and procedures.
Over the years, criminals have become more and more aggressive in their attempts to scam our citizens out of their hard-earned money by way of phone calls to individuals. These scammers often pose as law enforcement officers and use scare tactics to get people to send them money. Sheriff Berrong is pugnacious in his efforts to go after these criminals who prey on our most vulnerable citizens. Keeping our vulnerable citizenry safe is and will continue to be a priority for Sheriff Berrong.
Sheriff Berrong insists that deputies adhere to the Sheriff’s Office Mission Statement:
“The men and women of the Blount County Sheriff’s Office are committed to the citizens of the county, and they are committed to providing law enforcement, corrections, and criminal justice services through a partnership with the community that builds trust, reduces crime, creates a safe environment, and enhances the quality of life.”
But more than that, Sheriff Berrong trusts his deputies to do what they can to assist our citizens if they come across someone in need. If a deputy sees an individual experiencing car trouble, a flat tire, or other similar misfortunate events, they stop and they help. Lending a helping hand isn’t in the HR or Policies and Procedures manuals, but rather it is part of the Sheriff’s Office culture. It’s a high standard that employees know about from Day One.
